Telford Town held their nerve to secure a dramatic penalty shootout victory over AFC Bridgnorth following an entertaining 1–1 draw at the Lionheart Security Services Stadium.
After an end-to-end 90 minutes in which both sides had opportunities to win the game, the contest went all the way to penalties, where goalkeeper Adam Jenkins emerged as the Telford hero with the decisive save.
The visitors struck first during an open first half, Suar Deja giving AFC Bridgnorth the lead in the 29th minute.
Telford responded positively and continued to look for a route back into the contest, but Bridgnorth protected their advantage through to the interval.
Town didn't have to wait long after the restart to find the equaliser.
Just seven minutes into the second half, Charlie Swingwood struck in the 52nd minute to make it 1–1 and completely reopen the contest.
From that point onwards the game became increasingly stretched, with both teams pushing for the goal that would settle the tie.
There was late drama at both ends.
Bridgnorth thought they had found the breakthrough in the 86th minute when they had the ball in the Telford net, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside.
Then came an even bigger opportunity for Town.
With the game entering its final minute, Telford had the chance to snatch victory, only to see an effort crash against the crossbar.
It meant there was no separating the sides after 90 minutes and the tie would have to be decided from 12 yards.
SHOOTOUT DRAMA
Shaq McDonald stepped forward to take Telford's first penalty and converted, before Mitch Bradford followed suit with Town's second.
Goalscorer Charlie Swingwood maintained his composure to score Telford's third, before Brett also found the net with the fourth.
Tyrone Ofori was the only Telford player not to convert during the shootout, leaving the outcome finely balanced and ensuring the pressure continued to build.
That pressure was enormous when Isaac Cooper stepped forward for Telford's sixth penalty.
Knowing the importance of the kick, Cooper showed tremendous composure to dispatch a massive penalty, keeping Town alive and putting the pressure straight back onto Bridgnorth.
Then it was time for Jenkins to take centre stage.
With the opportunity there to settle the contest, the Telford goalkeeper produced when it mattered most, saving Bridgnorth's next penalty to spark the celebrations and send Town through.
It was a fittingly dramatic conclusion to a cup tie that had produced chances and near misses at both ends.
Bridgnorth had been minutes away from potentially winning it when their late effort was ruled out for offside, while Telford themselves had been inches away from avoiding penalties altogether when they struck the crossbar in the final minute.
Instead, the afternoon belonged to Town from the penalty spot.
Five successful penalties, a huge kick from Cooper under pressure and, finally, a match-winning save from Adam Jenkins ensured Telford emerged victorious after a pulsating afternoon of cup football.
