Telford Town Dig Deep to Progress in FA Vase

Telford Town booked their place in the next round of the FA Vase with a dramatic 6-5 penalty shootout victory over Darlaston Town after the sides played out a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes.

The visitors arrived at the Town Park looking to progress against the Capelli Sport MKL Premier Divison side and started brightly, creating a number of opportunities during the opening stages.

Darlaston continued to apply pressure, with debutant Nathan Scott going particularly close. His first effort from around 20 yards struck the post before another powerful strike from 22 yards narrowly missed the target.

Telford goalkeeper George Scott was called into action again as Darlaston continued to threaten, but the visitors eventually found the breakthrough on 27 minutes.

An attempted Telford back pass was intercepted by Agyemang, who just beat Scott to the ball before eventually finding the net from eight yards at the second attempt.

Telford responded positively and created opportunities of their own before the break. On the stroke of half-time, George Scott produced an excellent save to deny Darlaston skipper Jordan Spragg, who had connected with an Isaac Cooper free-kick.

Telford came out strongly after the interval and enjoyed their best spell of the game during the opening 15 minutes of the second half.

Desean Martin and Tyrone Alari both looked lively as Town pushed forward in search of an equaliser, with their pressure eventually rewarded on 57 minutes.

Joe Cuff timed his run perfectly to beat the offside trap before rounding goalkeeper Adam Jenkins and calmly slotting the ball into an empty net to bring Telford level.

The goal gave Town renewed confidence, and the defence stood firm as Darlaston continued to look for a winner.

David Anani and Godfred Sumerville were outstanding at the heart of the Telford defence, making a series of important interventions to deny Muyabi, Douglas and Agyemang.

Darlaston came close to snatching the victory late on when Ben McSkeane found himself unmarked at the far post, but his header drifted wide of the target.

With neither side able to find a winner, the tie went to penalties to determine who would progress to face Bewdley Town in the next round.

The shootout provided plenty of drama. Darlaston goalkeeper Adam Jenkins made a crucial save, only for the penalty to be ordered to be retaken after he was adjudged to have moved off his line too early.

Town held their nerve and converted the re-taken penalty, with the next eight spot-kicks successfully dispatched by both sides.

The decisive moment eventually arrived when Darlaston missed their next penalty, handing Telford Town a thrilling 6-5 victory on penalties and securing their place in the next round of the FA Vase.

It was a determined performance from Town, who showed character to recover from going behind, defended resolutely when Darlaston threatened and kept their composure when it mattered most from the penalty spot.
