Telford Town suffered a frustrating 3–2 defeat away at Wednesfield Community on Saturday, despite new signings Shaquille McDonald and Isaac Cooper both finding the net on their debuts.
In an entertaining First Division South encounter, Town twice responded during a frantic opening half before the hosts eventually secured all three points with a decisive goal ten minutes from time.
Wednesfield made the brighter start and took the lead after just ten minutes through Harreson Clarke.
Telford's response, however, was an encouraging one.
Just ten minutes later, new signing Shaquille McDonald marked his first appearance for the club in perfect fashion by finding the net to bring Town level at 1–1.
The visitors then turned the game around.
On 33 minutes it was another debutant who made an immediate impression, as Isaac Cooper struck to put Telford 2–1 ahead.
For a side looking to turn promising performances into league points, the turnaround represented exactly the sort of response manager Mike Dunn would have wanted after falling behind early.
Unfortunately, Town were unable to take their advantage into the interval.
Three minutes before half-time, Lawson Birch struck for Wednesfield to level the contest at 2–2 and bring an action-packed opening 45 minutes to a close with honours even.
Second-half frustration
After four goals in the opening period, the second half proved a much tighter affair.
Both sides went searching for the breakthrough, with Telford knowing that victory would provide a welcome boost following a run of league results in which performances have not always been reflected by the final scoreline.
The decisive moment eventually arrived on 80 minutes.
Wednesfield's Tyler Bishop found the net to restore the home side's advantage and leave Town with ten minutes to rescue something from the contest.
Telford pushed in search of another equaliser but were unable to find the third goal they needed, and the final whistle confirmed a narrow 3–2 defeat.
It was another frustrating afternoon for Town, particularly after twice responding to adversity during the opening half and holding a 2–1 advantage.
There were, however, significant positives to take from the afternoon.
Most notably, both Shaquille McDonald and Isaac Cooper scored on their Telford Town debuts, providing an immediate return from two additions to Mike Dunn's squad.
McDonald's 20th-minute equaliser and Cooper's goal 13 minutes later demonstrated the additional attacking threat available to Town as the club looks to climb the First Division South table.
The result leaves Telford with six points from their opening eight league fixtures, but attention now switches away from league action and towards a major cup occasion at the Lionheart Security Services Stadium.
FA Vase next
Town return home on Saturday, September 12, when they welcome Bewdley Town in the Second Qualifying Round of the Isuzu FA Vase.
Telford reached this stage following their dramatic victory over Darlaston Town in the previous round, drawing 1–1 after 90 minutes before winning 6–5 on penalties.
With a place in the next round at stake, Mike Dunn's side will now look to put the disappointment of Wednesfield behind them and produce a response on home soil.
